I can see from https://www.olimex.com/forum/index.php?topic=2511.msg11090#msg11090 that The LVDS signals multiplexed on the LCD_CON connector can be enabled by doing a custom build, and there are even instructions on how to do it.  Fantastic - thanks Philippe.

My question is this - by "LVDS" are we really talking about FPD-Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FPD-Link), and if so am I right in saying it's version I, since it's an 8-wire interface.

Furthermore, does the A20 have native support for FPD-Link II (single-pair interface with embedded clock) and FPD-Link III (additionally has control channel multiplexed on top of video and clock), or do I need additional hardware for that?

What I'm really looking for is the best option for supporting a touchscreen that can be up to 5m away from my A20 board, with as few wires as possible.

thanks for your suggestions!
