Ultimate Debian Image - Subtitles

Has anyone managed to load subtitles on mplayer?I load but i can see them.

try this: $ export VDPAU_OSD=1

tried but did not work.tried editing the config of mplayer as well but i cant load subtitles.
Ay other ideas to load subs?
