With A20 Debian 7 official image I was able to do this:

Then I could see kernel messages on LCD, really useful to see problems at boot.

Since changing to latest official debian 8 image i can no longer do this

any ideas?

How do look the kernel parameters? (try cat /proc/cmdline to see them). Is it there someting like console=/dev/tty1 (console is the frammebuffer - you can see the messages) or something like console=/dev/ttyS0? (console is the UART, no messages displayed). And what about the parameter quiet? (supperss kernel messages).
